The good, the bad, and the ugly

The Good:
Bad times often bring out the best in people...and I am so happy to report that I have amazing friends and family. I have had many visitors bring good cheer and good eats. A special thank you to Lizzie for coordinating the "Feed the McLartys" project. Each night brings a different culinary delight...tortila, lasagna, beef bourguignonne. Matt is especially pleased and hope it never ends. It also took a big load off my shoulders. Thank you Lizzie, Katey, Lauren, Briana. Mwah.
My mom and sister gracefully stepped in and helped take care of the brood, and also cook and clean, and so much more. Friends have offered kind words, book recommendations, and even have sent over books. I love our visitors who come chat with me, but I especially love when they play with the twins. I have major guilt over not being with them...which is actually how this whole mess it started. Which leads me to...

The Bad
Pain, lots of it. It's slowly getting better but, man, take my word for up, it really hurts to break your leg. At least this kind of break. And for some reason, the pain medication doesn't really work for me.
The immobility. It really sucks to not be able to get around, mostly because I have two adorable two year olds who are really active, and really funny, and I really want to hang out with them. And also because I have a newborn who, like most newborns, likes to be held while standing, and be rocked, and swayed, and I can't do those things.
And being just a few weeks post pardum just compounds all this stuff.

The Ugly
Check out that bruising!

A visit to St Barnabas

Sarah, Caleb, and I had a nasty fall on Thursday. I slipped on some ice outside a preK enrichment program and, as the lyrics go, "we all fall down"! They were a little freaked from the scare of the fall but then also blood-curdling scream for help, but otherwise unharmed. Me, not so much. I could tell immediately that my leg was broken.

A nice guy came to help me and got my phone so I could call Matt and then 911. We wound up at a local hospital, not the one I had just delivered at a mere 12 days ago. Though I wish we did go there, but that's another post.

At first I thought I'd get a cool cast (fun art project for the twins!) and some pain meds and be on my merry way. Unfortunately, I was wrong. X-rays revealed 2 breaks: 1 on the fibula and 1 on the tibia. Both on the right (driving) leg. I needed surgery and they scheduled it for the next day.

Friday morning I was pretty bummed, and Matt and Amy surprised me and brought Caleb and Sarah to visit! Yippee!!

They brought me beautiful flowers and a ballon that has 3 peas that says "peas get better soon". We had snacks and Sarah somehow managed to find the cartoon channel on the tv. I'm not sure who was more excited, them or me! They gave great hugs and kisses and then went home.

Pumpkin Picking

Caleb about to run off.
Sarah running off.

They stayed put in the car.

Caleb decided it was his turn.

No worries, Sarah got him back. Check out that grip!

Matt picked Caleb up and put him here. I was against it since I like to follow rules. But Matt wouldn't take him down until I snapped the picture. So enjoy!

ABCs and Crib Tents

I know I've been slacking, especially with the photos. But I've decided I'll write blog entries anyway, even if I have no pictures to share.

Today we went to the Turtleback Zoo for C&S's friend's birthday party. They had a great time running around and seeing all the animals that until now only existed in their "bookies". I think Matt enjoyed it the most, though!

Other breaking news, Sarah can recite the entire alphabet. I'm not really sure how that happened, but we were in the car yesterday and I had a video playing for them in the back where the letters must have been flashing across the screen (I've never seen the video since I'm usually in the front). You'd think she was reciting the winning lottery numbers, that's how excited I was! So proud. Caleb chimed in with a letter or two. Mind you, I think he's the smart, silent type. He likes to surprise us with his new vocabulary while giving us the look like - what, you think Sarah's the only one with brains? Caleb's favorite word is cars. By far. Everything is cars, and it's spoken with this cute lisp that just melts me.

Oh, and Caleb escaped his crib the other day. Crib tent was promptly put up. They zig, we zag. I guess that's the way it goes.
